Blackberry Map Pack Released

Wed, 2010-09-08 02:04

Given the recent buzz about UDK making an appearance on the iPhone, one might be tempted to suppose that what we have here is a bit of content for RIM's smart phone... but no! The Blackberry Map Pack is a collection of four distinct deathmatch maps by inferyes, one of which has been reworked as a CTF map and another for VCTF - six in all.

Below are a trio of shots, the fourth map requires a video (which can be viewed in the release thread) to "get".

Gears of War 3's 'Fate of Carmine' Campaign Raise $150K

Mon, 2010-09-06 15:21

Epic's 'Fate of Carmine' charity fundraiser campaign designed to let gamers decide the fate of the third Carmine brother in the next Gears of War game has reportedly raised $150,000 for the Child's Play charity. While Epic was understandably unwilling to release the results of the campaign, the results of the charity donation are more than welcome! Nice job, Epic!

Some guy on YouTube posted this video.

Borderlands Level Cap Going to 69

Mon, 2010-09-06 15:11

The level cap in Borderlands is reportedly being raised to 69 within the next few weeks, according to various reports around the web from PAX10. Although, it seems that for gamers without the Knoxx DLC the level cap will only be raised to 58.

"The level cap will now be 69," Pitchford said. "That's the magic number." He said the cap will come out close to the late-October release of the Borderlands Game of the Year edition.

Pitchford said that the studio felt that they couldn't go up a full 11 levels, as they did through the paid downloadable content, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, because they didn't want to put another level cap increase in paid DLC. The way that Borderlands DLC is structured, he said, would have required that anyone who would want to get the new level cap from new paid DLC would have had to buy all of the previous Borderlands DLCs as well. No good. Pitchford said Gearbox wanted all players to enjoy this raise of the level cap.

The patch that raises the level cap will be released for all three platforms and include balance tweaks and bug fixes again.

Gearbox Acquires 'Duke Nukem' Property Rights

Mon, 2010-09-06 14:40

According to an unsourced article over at ShackNews, Duke Nukem series creator 3D Realms has relinquished their property rights to the Duke Nukem brand to new Duke Nukem Forever developer, Gearbox. The move gives Gearbox complete rights to the Duke Nukem name.

The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need. Fans of the legendary hero and all the incredible talent that have ever helped him all deserve the very best support that we can bring. Please join me in supporting Duke in his triumphant return so that we may all enjoy the unique, one-in-million entertainment experience that only Duke Nukem can bring.

We'll keep watching the murky waters for a press release confirming this, but for the time being, wow?

UPDATE: Confirmed!

Duke Nukem Forever Never Dies!

Fri, 2010-09-03 19:41

2K Games and Gearbox have finally officially unveiled what has been teased for months: Gearbox is going to be finishing Duke Nukem Forever! I'll let the press release do the talking, but this is going to be a long news post anyway...

“Hail to the king, baby! It's unbelievable, it kicks ass and it's totally going to happen!” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, "Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver. All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen. Am I crazy? Balls of steel, baby, balls of steel!”

Duke has a booth with a *gasp* playable version of the game *gasp* at PAX. As you can see in the pictures, you can even take your picture as a woman if you feel like being the woman in that relationship. Congrats?

Also, here are a couple of live-streaming videos from lucky children who are playing the game already. Lucky!

RuneStorm's The Crucible Going Big-Time

Tue, 2010-08-31 01:35

The RuneStorm team have decided to take the big step into retail with their Unreal Tournament 3 modification The Crucible.

The finished product will be a more rounded game and should feature more maps, characters, weapons and also a few other features.

The idea behind this is to get the Crucible to a profesional standard, playing well and supporting us to make more cool games The final result will be it's own game, and not a UT3 mod, as the currently released versions play We'll be sure to update you as we progress, but we hope to manage it quickly, and we'll be working very hard at completing it and other projects. Which brings me to my next point.

Anyone familiar with their previous work will understand that polishing it to a professional level won't be much of a stretch. The team is also hinting at a second project in the works and we're definitely looking forward to hearing more about it!

Digital Extremes Brings Homefront To PC

Thu, 2010-08-19 02:30

Welcome back, Digital Extremes, to the Unreal Engine! THQ announces that the Canadian studio will be bringing Kaos Studios' Homefront to the PC in early 2011.

Homefront on PC further illustrates THQ’s commitment to PC gamers with additional features and options for multiplayer fans.

“Digital Extremes has a superb track record in PC development,” said David Votypka, General Manager at Kaos Studios, THQ. “While the team here at Kaos is completely focused on the core Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Homefront, our partnership with Digital Extremes means that PC gamers can look forward to a version of the game tailored to the demands of the discerning PC gamer.”

Monday Night Combat Reviews Are In...

Tue, 2010-08-17 23:38

Monday Night Combat, the latest XBLA game to be powered by UE3, is bringing in some pretty favorable reviews. Gamespot scores it 8/10 and says that "Clever combat mechanics and diverse soldier classes make this third-person shooter addictive and entertaining" and Giant Bomb sees it as a 4/5 star title, citing that "For $15, there's an awful lot of varied, satisfying multiplayer action in here".

Currently, it's an XBLA-exclusive title, but it looks like it'd be a great title for the PC. Seeing as it's published by Microsoft Game Studios, one could guess that it has a much stronger chance of showing up on GFWL than it would Steam.
