View Full Version : Clients getting high pings

Hi all

I'm serving on ADSL, (well trying!) clients connected across the net have a ping of around 200.

What ini lines do I have to set to make this lower, I've got maxclient rate at 3000 at the mo, but thats the only one I've set.

Ping is 200 even with only one player on the server, with my stats showing an upload of just under 3k

Any help as ever greatly appreciated

Whats the spec of the machine and is it running dedicted?

Its the free dedicated server running on a PIII500, with 256mb ram.

I know this is a little low, but with me playing on it from my other lan machine with five bots it works okay.

But when another of my clan joined in my place (with bots) then his ping was always around the 200 mark?

Any ideas?

Thanks again

Ok popped on had a wonder round ping stayed between 40 and 70 which is quite for DSL so nothing wong there must be your m8's connection.

You need to check your upload bandwidth....that can be done at a variety of sppedcheck sites.
I believe each player requires around 28-30k upload bandwidth....and asdl is not famous for having much upload bw....maybe 128....maybe more. Anyway...this could possible be a cause for people pinging high there. If its just one player is on..and he/she is pinging high then its prolly their connection.
You might also see if NGStats is enable and disable it. That might make for better play. You could try it.

Okay.

Was fine when you lot tried it (thanks for that!)

Tonight major spikes, and pings of 200+.

From clanmembers and people just dropping in off the master lists

Speed tests of the connection show it to be no worse than the other night so what gives?

Are there any other ini lines other than maxclientrate to set, that variable is currently set at 3000, 5000 was worse as expected.

Is there anything else I can change to try and improve this ? anything about memory / processor / connection load in the ini?

Or I read somewhere that win does not make full use of the connection always, am on Win98 so could this be a factor?
