New to this site and just wanted to say hello to all my fellow Linux admins!
Just put up 'PPMUT2K3 -=Linux=- St Louis, MO' @<hidden> 65.107.72.62 running UT2003 v2136 dedicated on Slackware Linux on a PIII Celeron 800 / 386MB / 30GB IDE box on *cough* company T1. Running A-OK, looks like we will need some more RAM but she still manages OK as-is.
Wondering what distro's everyone uses here...
Anyway, hello to all, and thx to the ppl that run this site for a great resource!

St. Louis eh? I am in Kansas City here. Always good to see more dedicated servers in Missouri!
Are you in a UT2003 Clan? If so, what clan and can we scrim sometime? If not, check out our clan website by clicking the banner image below.

Nope, not yet. Just myself and a few friends that get togther and play regularly. We'd love to get together and play anytime. BR is our current game of choice, what about you?
Nice site BTW, looks like oS has it's stuff together!
its hard to work when i se people playing confused.gif
Heh, tell me about it :D Sometimes we take a few more breaks than usual here depending on how full the server gets, and if we're not in the middle of working on one of the work servers...

Hi there fellow linux admins :)
Slackware 8.1
P-III 600
512 mb ram
3megabit ADSL connection
Instagib Lowgrav High-speed Bombing run server
just a quick question like that... what's the most amount of ppl you get on your server before you get perfomance issues ???
I find that after 8 players, with my currrent hadware, i start to get choppiness... and I know it's not lag or connection issue... I tried it on a lan and i did the same thing....
is UT dedicated for linux really THAT ressource hungry ??? or am i doing something wrong ???

Definitely a fun thread, so I'll step up for my chance to brag... ;)
Red Hat 8.0 (worked on 7.3 too, we just upgraded)
dual AMD MP1900+
1 GB PC2100 DDR
University T3, separate from the residence halls' connection (good thing too!)
Running a UT2k3 and a classic UT server on this beast, as well as punishing it with my normal work-type tasks... (grad student in astrophysics... I write/run faaaaar more demanding apps than that 2k3 server, I can assure you. ;) )
As for performance issues, when we first put up our 2k3 server, I didn't bother setting the player cap, so it defaulted to 32... People piled onto our server, cuz it was one of the few non-cable modem servers around at the time... Anyway, we got up to about 25 before performance went to hell... That was waaaaaaaay too many people anyway, so we run a 12 or 16 player limit now. Definitely running smooth as silk like that... We do zminstagib BR with a tweaked up speed by default, but we switch it up to DM now and then... As soon as we get a 2k3 version of the Carry the Flag mod we have for classic UT, we'll be playing that too... ;)
So to attempt to answer your question, no, I don't think you're doing anything wrong... UT2k3's just a heavy duty resource hog... ;)
And _unlike_ Clan oS, Clan Apoc does _not_ have it's stuff together... But we still have a ton of fun anyway... ;)

kilou, you might do a quick check with 'free' to make sure you box isn't paging. with 386MB after awhile my swapfile shows usage and we get a little laggy every now and again with 8 ppl.
Apoc- Nice Box :)

Thanks, Stack.... I thank my boss every day for picking these badboys up (we have 3 in our lab right now). She had me on a SunBlade 100 before that, and I have to say, if anyone out there intends to do anything with a comp outside of email and internet access, stay away from those rotten comps... Totally weenie, and no UT for Solaris, to boot! How can you live?! ;)
