CTF / BR exploit ...

1 Attachment(s)
In case you did not notice that there is an exploit in CTF / BR.
Joe Wilcox has released a temporary fix until the next patch

Quote:

Attached is a better fix until we release the next patch. This is a
tiny server side actor that will detect the usage of the hack and fix
the exploit as it happens. It also logs the cheater so please feel free
to send [email address] the GUID's of people caught using it so we
can get rid of them.

It should be compatible with all versions of UT2K4 and all mods. Just
follow the installation directions in the CTFFix.txt file located in the
archive.

...

This is needed on ANY CTF or BR server ... it should be used for VCTF as well.

I don't have any details about the exploit, but since in Assault there's a GameObject as well (the energy core), maybe the serveractor should be used there as well.

Shambler 25th June, 2005 07:32 AM

It should actually be used on every single UT2k4 server due to the nature of the exploit.

Mono 25th June, 2005 07:47 AM

Is it possible to get more info about what the hack exactly does?

frisp 25th June, 2005 08:18 AM

I'd like more info on it as well.

Emik 25th June, 2005 09:07 AM

Same Here...
Exploits ok but what the hell is it about then?
/me wants to know too

Shambler 25th June, 2005 10:22 AM

Sorry I think info about it should be kept as secret as possible, even tho there is a temporary fix....if you PM me and I think I can trust you (and only if you actually have USE for info, i.e. if you want to put protection against it in your mod) I can give you info.

Don't bother messaging me otherwise.

So server admins are expected to update their server because of some unknown exploit. Sure, and cows can fly. :o

Shambler 25th June, 2005 01:02 PM

Well it's up to the admins really :) nobody is saying they have to update their servers...I'm just saying it's a very good idea if you don't want a$$hats ruining your fun. (I can see this being milked by the exploiters, while they can, for every tiny bit of annoyance it causes people)

It is still best to keep info about the exploit secret...at least untill the new patch comes with the proper fix.

Sigurd 25th June, 2005 04:49 PM

When will this patched be released? Soon I hope because this is getting annoying i am going to servers and there is no flags some servers dont' have vote so I have to wait for a admin or get one if I can.

I understand we should implicitly trust big corporations and succumb to their every wish, but, see, I hate this thing called "lag".

Is there the possibility this fix will lag my server somehow, someway?

I am asking because I have loaded quite a few mods onto one of my servers recently, and I am trying to keep an eye on what I really need to add, and what I can leave off. (Yes, the server has CTF on it)

Shambler 5th September, 2005 01:19 PM

The CTF/BR fix doesn't cause more lag and everybody needs it on their server.

Azura 15th September, 2005 06:10 PM

I just had a look at the code and the fix is small. It shouldn't cause any lag at all. I'm trying to figure out what it's trying to detect.

[ISS]BlackIce 15th September, 2005 07:31 PM

LOL Woudln't you like to know :). Its not trying to detect the exploit in progress its just cleaning up the after effects. I am sure epic has figured it out although doubt it judging from the other shit i have made to make your lives miserable.

Azura 16th September, 2005 06:51 AM

Aren't your buddies at utcheats waiting for you ?

[ISS]BlackIce 16th September, 2005 12:06 PM

Who actually gets on utcheats? i mean really it doesn't have shit.

Azura 18th September, 2005 07:01 PM

True. Must be one of the most boring sites I've ever seen :P .

[ISS]BlackIce 18th September, 2005 07:51 PM

I would unfortunately have to agree with you :).

Fix does NOT work with DEMO servers!

Just in case any admin running demo servers runs across this post, Joe Wilcox (of Epic) did revise his earlier response that this fix doesn't work on demo servers. In fact, QuickShot has tested this fix on demo servers resulting in immediate crash on startup, due to demo servers not being allowed to run server actors.
