Well, most OS's have remote control built in. [All Windows since XP]

For 95 thru 2000 I use WinVNC. It's not secure itself, so you can't leave it up 24/7 unless it's through a VPN tunnel. It's small, easy to install, easy to remove. When connections are initiated by the computer to be viewed, it drills through outbound firewalls without any special settings or changes to them. I've been using it for over 10 years on that basis.

The iPhone app is cool, but a last resort.
