Core duo vs UT1
hi
is there any reason why my UT chops like hell after upgrading my laptop to core duo processor? the intro video jumps like 10frames ahead and then 2 backwards, then 10 frames forward again etc etc... i wouldn't mind the intro video, but i can't play at all it goes into slow motion all the time and it doesn't matter if i've got "Portable/Laptop" or "Home office desk" selected from the power management. I've also tried to enable and disable vsync from nvidia's control panel and in ut, in various combination - nothing made it normal. 1 combination even removed the crosshair
laptop specs:
intel Core Duo T2050, 512MB DDR2, 15,4" WSXGA+, HDD 80GB, DVD-RAM, Intel i945PM chip, VGA 256MB NVidia Go7600, intel 3945ABG Wifi, Realtek LAN, SD/MMC/SM/MS, Fingerprint, integrated camera and mic
Win XP Pro, 32-bit
i've also tried Omega display drivers, but that thing cannot find the nvidia card, so it won't install. also tried Deus EX game, which is supposed to be built on Unreal engine and that choppen in the same way :S
i've tried different driver-combinations as well.
could BIOS upgrade fix this problem?

Open the game, minimize it and go into task manager.. click on the UnrealTournament thread and set the affinity. Make it just use one cpu. Also if there is a "game mode" on your laptop power settings use that when you play. Or disable any cpu stepping while you play if possible.

PS!: Opengl still slows it down. maybe should still consider flashing the bios? d3d works normally, but i dont like it's mouse movement. and is there any way i could permanently set the affinity to ut?
and i re-checked. d3d still warps (but not that much that it throws me out of the servers) - it's not a smooth picture :S

the problem is not this.
you will have the same problem with Unreal Tournament too probably..
that easy, the processor you ahve is WAY performing alot,
and have something i not remember how it's named.
so when the server is not used it went idle...
and the old unreal game, basically take no processor ressources and server go idle when your playing the game.
well just to desactive this technologie that i not remember how it's called by intel

what do you mean by server is not used?
but is there any patch for ut which enables me to use both cores?
atm i'm using ony the first core and i can play, but the picture warps like hell. dunno what's wrong - fps is ok (liike 75 etc..) but it feels like it was only 10 :| so i can't be very destructive in close combat - the screen warp just doesn't let me aim where i wan't.
and dunno what the hell is wrong with my laptop at all - the mouse cursor seems to be warping on the desktop as well! - it feels exactly like the way if you use software render in ut... it doesn't matter which resolution i use. i've tried various drivers, even updated BIOS etc...
and btw, the integrated sound is whistling all the time - i've muted all the cd-players, mics, etc... - is that normal nowadays?

Turn off any power saving features. The chances are that your laptop cpu is using a speedstep variant which varies clock speed to save power.

i've got this "Home office desk" selected and it means that the cpu will always be on highest clock speed. but when i'm using both cores, then the picture runs in slow motion. when i select only 1 core, it goes out of slow motion, but starts to warp - warp like in was 10 fps, although it's over 70.
but actually - why does it go over 70, when i've put mindesired framerat to 60? i've also got netspeed 5500. but the netspeed actually doesn't change anything...

With Opengl you should activate vsync (or override to same as desktop) and set frameratelimit to 150 or 200.

thanks. got it to work with opengl now, but what the hell fps is nice 60, but when the action starts, it like drops to 15 or smth (although it shows 60)- the picture starts flickering and i still can't move the crosshair smoothly - if i don't hit at the first hit, then i won't have any chance at all...

well, it goes to slow motion just when the fps jumps to 90 for some reason. when it's on 60, then the picture is perfect... but just when it hits 90.... like who asks it to go on 90??

argh. can't fuckin play llike this :x
what are my options to get my money back if this is my replacement laptop for an older model(which had been in warranty for 4 times), the integrated camera randomly disables and enables itself, the laptop freezes with robotic sound at the backround for ~8-9 seconds (randomly, maybe once or twice a day) and the fact that i had to reinstall windows 6 times before getting the cursor on the desktop move a bit more normal? oh, and the integrated sound is whistling all the time - is taht normal?

1. If you have a dell, there is a program called "speed step"
that comes with the computer, this program adjusts the speed
of the power supply and processor to save battery energy
when the laptop isn't plugged in. This also makes UT run
500% faster, the solution is to either disable speed step all
together or to set it to "Maximum or always on"
2. The second issue could be with the power supply. Go into
your control pannel, click power supply and see if it is set
for "laptop" if it is, make sure your laptop is plugged in and
set it to "desktop".
3. Here is another fix if the following two didn't work, Open up
notepad and enter the following text without the
quotes "UnrealTournament.exe - CPUSPEED=X " now go
to 'file' and 'save as' in notepad, in 'file name' type -
"UnrealTournament.bat" without quotes now go to 'save
in' ,save it to your Unreal Tournament System folder. Now all
you have to do is create a shortcut to do this right c!ick and
hold on the UnrealTournament.bat in your Unreal Tournament
System folder and drag it to your desktop, unrelease the
button and it will say create shortcuts here
4. If that doesnt work change the desktop shortcut to:
"C:\Program Files
\UnrealTournament\System\UnrealTournament.exe" -
CPUSPEED=X
X is the actual SPEED in MHZ your processor is...
For example,. I had an AMD 3000+ Processor. The actual
Speed of this processor is 2.0 GHZ or 2000 MHZ, so X would
be 2000
If all else fails flash the Bios, update drivers, and download a dual core optimizer.
Worked for me. I went through 2 weeks of troubleshooting, but my UT runs flawlessly at maxed 60 fps, and can go up to 513 unmaxed.

thanks - the .bat thing worked.
i no longer have to set the affinity manually anymore =)
but there's still some weird fps drops. other than that - it's more playable! thanks!

uhm...
like what the hell? it worked on the first try, but then it went back to slow motion..... * vull chucks the crap into the bin :x

prolly will...
and btw - it works perfectly on software rendering! in the matter of smoothness that is - you can only imagine what kind of cubics i am against with it... but yeh, no slow motion or anything...

http://www.blinkyou.com/codes/flash/squares.swf
it chops on my Dual Core laptop!!! (now 1GB of ram)!!! even when stepping is disabled
PS: just when i tried to edit the post, the laptop hung with robotic sound at the background (for 8-9 seconds)..... it does that randomly, mayabe twice a day, sometimes only 1

If all fails, give this a shot.
http://www.ut-files.com/Utilities/Dual_Core_UT_Fix.zip
Replace your UT.exe with this one.
It forces UT to only run on 1 core, no matter what.
It made a huge difference for me.
