Default Server Not Listed

Well it's been a long time since playing Unreal Tournament GOTY and have to say I've missed it. A few of my friends have decided to boot up a server for a weekend just to play some of our old custom maps from many moons ago however, we're having trouble getting the server to show up in the deathmatch list. I know we can simply use the server ip for us all to have a game but to me its gone beyond that because I would like to know why it will not show up therefore I'm asking for your help

What I have done so far on a Windows 7 64bit PC-

Updated my game to 451
Redirected all the custom maps to my webspace and changed the ini AllowDownloads=False
Opened all my fibre optic router ports TCP 7777,8080,8777,9777,27900 UDP 7777,7778,7779,27900
Ticked the box Advertise Server
Allowed Unreal Tournament in windows firewall
Turned off my antivirus software
Turned off the router firewall
I've also changed one or two things in the Unreal Tournament ini
Although I can see the server from the LAN tab only, I'm not sure even if it's possible to see the server from the host pc or another PC from behind the same router in the DeathMatch public server list , I have had it confirmed off my friend that he can't see it from his side.

As a last resort I am asking if you can look at my ini file as you may be able to spot something obvious. It's worth noting that I have tested the same scenario on UT2004 and the server shows up in both LAN and the DeathMatch public list which makes me think it must be something to do with a setting in my UTGOTY ini.

you opened the ports, but did you use port forwarding ? you need to forward the ports 7777,7778,27900 to local server ip address i.e 192.168.1.150 and the server should have a static address

Hi qwerty and thanks for the fast reply.

Yeh sorry I forgot to mention that I did give my computer a static ip 192.168.1.30 and listed all ports to point to this address but unfortunately still no luck.

ok password removed ooops

Had a private message who suggested I turn the ServerBehindNAT=True to False since the ports are being forwarded manually, Unfortunately this didn't resolve this issue.

Hi ~V~

Just checked my router ports again and indeed I've just made a typo on my post, the correct port is open however 27900 UDP+TCP

While I'm on, can somebody confirm if you able to see your own server in the public server Deathmatch list from the same PC as your hosing the sever and not just the LAN tab?

mmm I remember having this problem back in 2002 and there was a big discussion about it on the Epic forums at the time.
I seem to remember that the PC that the UT server was running on had to be stand alone with a static IP and that IP had to be set as the DMZ server on the router.
You also had to enable pinging and ServerBehindNAT must be True.

Ok I have just setup a NAT server here to test and it does work 100% and you can see it in the UT Browser.

1. I used an old Laptop 1.4gig Celeron with Xp and connected it to my router with a cable to port 1.
2. I set the Ip Address to 192.168.0.10
3. Installed UT99 with patch 451.
4. Created a batch file as Startup.bat with the following command line:
ucc server DM-Tutorial?Game=Botpack.DeathMatchPlus?Mutator=MapVo teX101.MapVoteX
5. Went onto my Netgear N300 router, Advanced - Setup - WAN Setup and set the DMZ Server as 192.168.0.10
6. Enabled 'Respond to Ping on Internet Port'.
7. Made sure the folowing is in my Server.ini file:

MasterServerAddress=unreal.epicgames.com

Hi ProAsm and thanks for taking time to respond to my post especially as you have gone to so much trouble to test a server to answer my question "Can you see your own server from the host computer?"

Your response suggest to me that the answer is no unless your prepared to set up a NAT server.

I suspected that was the case hence I have been hosting from my main computer and tried to see if listed in the All Servers tab in the UT browser from another PC behind the same router but without any luck I'm afraid.

I have assigned a static ip on the host PC and set my router (Huawei HG533) DMZ to the same ip 192.168.1.30

Have also changed the value ServerBehindNAT to True.

I had to google enable pinging which left me to doing something really bazar on my windows 7 firewall since there doesn't appear to be a setting of that nature on my router.

Also forwarded all the UT recommended ports to the same ip.

I've allowed UT in the windows firewall by ticking the boxed home and public.

I've turned my antivirus progy off (during testing) so now in security terms my PC is shouting with it's arse in the air "COME AND GET ME"

Where I'm stuck now is the start up bat. I'm not being lazy and I have tried to google it however, I'm not sure how to do it or even why you need to do it or the respond to ping, again that doesn't appear to be in my router setting therefore I would really appreciate it if you could explain this part to me in the hope that I can resolve the listed server issue.

Ok, looking at your log, you are running a Listen Server which is what your problem is.

You need to run a dedicated server using UCC.exe and not UnrealTournament.exe

Here is what you do.

In your UT System folder, find Ucc.exe and drag a shortcut from it onto your desktop.
Rightclick on that shortcut on your desktop and select Properties.

You'll see the Target reads:
C:\UnrealTournament\System\UCC.exe

Add to it so it now reads:
C:\UnrealTournament\System\UCC.exe server DM-Morpheus.unr?Game=BotPack.DeathMatchPlus?Mutator=B DBMapVote304.BDBMapVote,QAnnouncer.QAnnouncer?

Click Apply and then OK.

Now doubleclick on that shortcut and you'll see your dedicated server startup.

Don't worry about that too much at this stage as all that will happen is people reading your server on the UT browser, it will show a ping of either 9999 or 0
Some routers just default that as on, so maybe you lucky

If you are uncertain about the shortcut etc, here is a ServerStartup.bat file for you.
Download it and unzip it in your UT System folder and just double click on it to start your dedicated server.
Basically it does the same job as the shortcut

Hi Again ProAsm, again many thanks for all your input, and I'm glad to report that the server is now visible yipeeee. There's much to go threw so here goes,

Interesting that you did not forward any ports and you got it working and that you don't have a virus progy but hey if it worked fair doos.

I did stumble upon something which may have got it working although I'm not entirely sure, when I used PFConfig to configure my router (HG533) to open the ports for UT, PFConfig did the hard work for me however, and you may indeed be able to clarify this for me, in the router menu WAN Connection screen (below) I noticed all 4 LAN ports where un-ticked with the port binding option and so my theory is that even though the ports where set in the router, they where not actually actively working because I didn't tick a specific LAN port, in my case LAN 1 which is connected to the server PC.



As you can see I have ticked LAN1 and the server worked at this point. I took your advice and have changed my DNS to the default gateway (below).



I've also done your instructions by doing a dedicated server by changing the path name on the UCC file, when I ran the shortcut for the first time it seemed to work well until I joined the server via UT.exe, I noticed my Qannouncer wasn't working and the map vote, upon investigation looking at the UCC log window, there where 2 errors 'can't resolve package NULL' or some thing like that, it was then when I realised that I had pasted your path directly from this forum page which for some reason put spaced between the info , you can see that there is a space between B DBMapVote304 that should read BDBMapVote304 in the post , with that now changed everything works just fine, apart from still not seeing it from my other PC within the same house but my friend has confirmed he can see it on his side and that's the important thing, so thanks a lot it's much appreciated.

Lastly, and sorry to be a pain, if it's any consolation I'm getting bored listening to myself . Whilst I will have to get used to no little UT icon in the taskbar while the server is on, what exactly is the difference between starting the dedicated server option from within the game than starting it using the bat u made. I have always clicked dedicated and not start so I thought it was a dedicated server?

Yes, you only need LAN1 ticked which is your server.
Those LAN ports are only ticked if that particular port has a Static IP as does your Server PC.

Unfortunately the spaces are created by the forum and many forums do this, but you soon figure that out as you have and remove them

A listen Server, which you start from within UT itself, which basically makes you the Server and others join you.
Now lets say the telephone rings and you leave the server, because you are the server, it crashes and everyone gets kicked off.
As a dedicated server, it carries on, and when you come back you can rejoin and continue.
Listen servers do not send out UdpServerUplink information and are normally used for LAN only parties.

Anyway pleased its all up and running for you
