Finally got it taken care of. UT actually runs smoother in Ubuntu Breezy than it does in XP. Now if I can find a way to map in linux, I'm all set. (problem is, I haven't seen anything encouraging about unreal ed in linux...)

UT works in wine, so I guess UED should work aswell.

Bah, apparently they never ported it or whatever. I suppose I could get cedera and see if it will emulate it, or just keep a dual boot so I an use windblows just to edit maps.

OOkay, to tie up loose ends, I used a loki installer again to install ut freshly, and it decompressed the maps for me before it finished the installation.
Unrealed won't work in either linux or wine, so I had to use vmware player, qemu, and wine to make a virtual drive to put XP on my linux install so that I can run xp in a virtual environment, install UT in it, then run the editor. BUT, ut won't play in xp in vmware, so I have to stick stuff on another computer on the network, leave xp in vmware, retrieve the files, and put them in ut in linux to run and or test them.
THEREFORE, I learned how to force xp to dual boot with ubuntu, and can just hit up xp when I have to edit or script.

Scripting/compiling works just great at Linux. "wine ucc make" doesn't make any problems. It's worse with UED ... it's starting but then it crashes in some moment .

UT works in vmware, even with the experimental hardware 3D.

I can't get it to run! I'll have to mess with it some more, because I'd really like to be able to test stuff as I'm doing it.

here we go again. ut was working fine, now I get the same error message as was stated in the original post (starting ut from terminal). I look at my .log, and I see this interesting tidbit:
Critical: appError called:
Critical: fread failed: BufferCount=1024 Error=1
Exit: Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError
Exit: Executing USDLClient::ShutdownAfterError
Exit: Exiting.
Uninitialized: Name subsystem shut down
Uninitialized: Log file closed, Fri Aug 24 23:13:14 2007
wtf is fread?

Bah, I removed my user and ut.ini files, and it started up fine.

Unhelpful message!
I got this when my disk was full, and my User.ini became size 0. I cleared some space, deleted User.ini, and UT generated a fresh one.
