Been trying to set up a dedicated UT03 server for a day now. No matter what I do all, I get is N/A on the server list. I tried connecting my server direct to my cable modem through a switch (didn't work). I tried getting it to work from behind my Netgear router (didn't work).

My ISP is Comcast if that matters and my connection is 300k/3000K. The firewall has been disabled in XP. The server is an Intel black box 733 celeron 512mb/40gb. I followed the tutorials on this forum to the (letter) but still no luck.

Questions

What I tried to do was install a switch directly behind my cable modem. From the switch I took one port straight to my server and another to my modem port of my Netgear router. (follow me?)

Everything seemed to be ok, both my router and my server were assigned public IP's. From the server I could browse the web and the UT03 dedicated software seemed to logon OK except the very last line would allways say Game ID =0 why why why?

I also noticed that I could not ping from my 192.168.x.x network behind the router to my server machine connected as described above. Why why why? I also noticed my server listed online allways had N/A for a ping. When I tried to connect to it, it would get stuck at INDEX.UT2 I searched my PC for that file and can't find it anywhere!

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

KM

Yeah sure did, even made the NAT entry. Do you see anything above that just screams failure? Are my fundamentals ok?

Just tried it again (didn't work). Are you using a Netgear? Are they known good? I have an RP614 router.

Thanks

Hey, does anyone have like a basic, known good .ini I could use till I get things worked out? Seeing how I'm troubleshooting it'd be nice to have known good elements.

You've asked a bunch of questions here and talked about several different configurations.

At this point I'm not sure where we are.

If you're still battling this issue, start by telling us the current topology (how stuff is connected) and what isn't working.

Then we'll get more specific if need be.

From my cable modem I go straight to my router which has a built in switch. My UT03 server is hanging off one of those ports.

Ok,

So you're playing from behind the firewall on a server behind the same firewall?

...and this is where the "ping" is always no response... from the game browser?

I'm having the same problems here as webnutt. I can join my LAN Dedicated Server from within myLAN, but I can't join it from outside. Here's a list of what I have:

WinXP Pro
AMD-2100+
512 Megs of RAM
Internal ZOOM Cable Modem (Model # eludes me at this moment).
Currently just using the Windows XP Firewall.

NAT and Firewall is all handled internally on this machine. The other computers in my network connect via generic HUB's or Switches with all routing and filters deactivated.

Here's a list of what I've done to try and get this to work:
Cleared De fault Firewall Ports 7777,7778,7787,7788,28900,28902 on both TCP and UDP
Remapped the default ports to 8000,8001,8010,8011 (set [url] port=8000)
Disabled all Firewalls entirely
Disabled QoS Packet Service
Disabled all extranious protocols bound to my Cable Modem (such as IPX, which isn't used anyway)

Everything else seems to work with my setup. WebAdmin seems to work just fine (haven't tested that fully from outside of the firewall, but preliminary results appear positive). I'm don't think stats are being uploaded, but I'm not concerned about those.

From what I've read in a number of posts, this seems to be a common problem with Win2k and WinXP servers that has yet to be resolved. Some people have reportedly gotten this to work, but nobody can say exactly what they did to get it to work.

I'll post more info here as I experiment with other things.

You may have similar symptoms, but your situation is entirely different than Webnutt's.
[list:78cb5d8b69]1) Many people serve the game on Win2k and XP platforms, so it's just a matter of training your system.

2) Win2k is very different from XP, especially when running the XP internal firewall, which Win2k doesn't have.

3) I'd have to guess that your issue can be dealt with by re-training XP's firewall.

4) The primary difference here is that while your Firewall is Software (internal), Webnutt's is an external hardware device.[/list:u:78cb5d8b69]
This brings me to a question for you HolyCrusader... you said

[list:78cb5d8b69]Am I to understand that your XP machine is sharing it's internet connection with the rest of your LAN? So your XP machine has 2 NIC's?

Please Clarify before I comment further.[/list:u:78cb5d8b69]
As for WebNutt... Please send the manufacturer and Part Number of the Router you're using so I can look up it's manual to help further.

My router is a Netgear RP614. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I just disable ICF in the services. Would that be enough to ensure the firewall is off?

Ummmm.... I'm confused. Why is ICF involved? Are you using an internal XP firewall too? .... BTW, what OS are you using? (Home or Pro)

I've looked over the RP614 manual pretty thoroughly.

Unless the firmware you're running is different than the version the manual was written for, the setup should be pretty standard. (Actually, I'm pretty sure it is diferent. Not too many manufacturers revise their manuals along with the firmware)

On settings:
[list:7cd142c319]I personally wouldn't use DMZ, SPI or uPnP if the router permits deselection of these.

For your game server, don't use DHCP to automatically obtain an address from the router. Instead, statically assign it's parameters, but be sure to assign them outside the range of the DHCP server in the router.
[list:7cd142c319]
I.E. - If your router is 192.168.0.1 and it's DHCP server assigns 50 addresses starting at 192.168.0.100, then use 192.168.0.200 as your servers's static address, and 192.168.0.1 as it's gateway and DNS server address.[/list:u:7cd142c319]
Then, when you forward the UT ports, you won't have to worry about what happens when the entire network is powered off. The power up sequesnse determines which PC's are assigned what address in a DHCP driven system.[/list:u:7cd142c319]
Finally, now that you've raised the spectre of ICF, please tell me where you've made that "NAT" entry you talked about and what your port forwarding settings are.

Oh, and check that router p/n again.... is it RP614, or RP614v2? It's kinda important. For example, you could use an "Address Reservation" to keep your server at the same IP address, if the router supports reservations.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I know we're close to getting it to work.

Ok here's what I'm working with. My router is the RP614 with the latest firmware installed not the v2.

I have port's 7777-7778, 7787-7788, 28900-28902 fowarded to local IP of server. I'm not using DMZ or SP1 or uPnP.

I have been using DHCP and have never seen my server come up as anything other than 192.168.0.5 perhaps the router keeps track of MAC's. Do I still need to assign it a static?

I don't use ICF at all, I just wanted to be sure that I had it turned off correctly/completly.

Here is a paste of my .ini it's basicaly the one that comes with the dedicated/server dwnload. I hope the admins don't mind the large dump but this could save alot time.

I'd abbreviate this a bit, although I see this used successfully.

7777-7788 Takes care of everything you'd really need. I don't do the 28900-28902.

Ok, but I was hoping you would confirm that these are disabled IN THE ROUTER. - not in some way in Windows.

Right... here's the ticket. If you have a router feature called "Address Reservation" (in their manuals) and you've filled it in to always give your server the same address, then you're fine.

If you haven't got the feature, then assign it as I said.

If you have the feature, but havn't used it - do so.
[list:ced84777d2]Note:
[list:ced84777d2]For the benefit of everyone reading this - In several router's I've tested there is a latency issue when forwarding ports to DHCP assigned addresses. It commonly shows up only under load... say 5 players or more. I don't know why this should be, but it is often so. On really time critical servers, I've sometimes had to disable DHCP altogether and assigned the network entirely static to avoid this issue. It also makes troubleshooting more simple as well. - Just thought I'd pass that along.[/list:u:ced84777d2][/list:u:ced84777d2]

I won't take the time to explain how here, but it's extremely important that until we get the rest of this system running, that you make certain that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is indeed disabled.

If you can play a game on the server from another PC on your LAN, then it's probably ok.

This brings me to your concern about the INI....

There are no "show stoppers" that I see in the INI, but it's kinda tedious to examine one so I could have missed something.

In any case, here are my observations:

This is only important if you occasionally play a game from the server itself. I usually disable purging entirely. Why have to ever wait on something I've already waited for? To do this just make it "=0"

32 megs is WAY too low for a good server. 128 or 256 would be more like it. Try 128 and see if it gives the system fits. (XP is pretty big and you don't want to get the system thrashing for memory.) Also, a 733meg Celeron isn't the power box it could be so this setting could mean more to you than it otherwise might.

This is only important if you occasionally play a game from the server itself, but 2600 isn't much of an internet speed. I'd give myself at least what you gave other players.... 7000.

Not too bad, but I'd enable the port unreach feature. The rest looks ok.

DUDE.... you'll need a redirect. Set one up as soon as we get this sucker workin.

WebAdmin disabled. NP if you don't need it, but assign a password.

Let's see... 32 Players * 7000 bytes per sec each = 224000 bytes / sec

So... I'm guessing you haven't thought this one through. That corresponds to an internet connection with 1.8megabit upload. I see you said you had 300kbit. ( I hope that's a test result )

That's 37500 bytes. At a MaxInternetClientRate of 7000 that's 5 players max.

A rate of 3500 would allow 10 players.

Anyway, you get the point.

Don't allow spectators, unless you want to give up a player for each potential one.

Guess that's it for now... I'll be offline for a coulple days, so if you don't answer quickly, it'll be a while before I can get back.

Good luck.

Oh, I almost forgot... You said you never could ping your server from the browser while behind your firewall. - or something to that effect
[list:ced84777d2]Here's the deal. This doesn't mean you're not successfully advertised. Most firewall routers don't process traffic for their own public IP correctly if the device requesting the traffic is BEHIND THE SAME FIREWALL.

To examine how your own server responds to the internet... do it from another public IP like a dialup account or have a friend do it.

When you play a game from your LAN, do it on your server's LAN address.[/list:u:ced84777d2]

It occurs to me that I never asked how you were launching the server.

For our purposes, don't use the UCC method.

Launch the server from the GUI, and be sure to fill out all the various settings tabs before doing so.

You can even do it non-dedicated if you like.

Sorry, let me clarify.
I have two Network Interface Cards in my system. The first one is a Zoom PCI Cable Modem Model 5001. The second one is a generic 10/100 Ethernet card (Built onto the motherboard, haven't checked exact model yet).

I'm not sure if the problem is actually with the WindowsXP Firewall, as I've disabled that entirely in a couple tests. I'm not running any other firewalls atm either.

Update
I recently disabled WindowsXP Internet Connection Sharing, and that seems to have fixed the problem - I can use my old-fashioned Dial-Up connection to connect to my server. However now I need to figure out how to get around XP's ICS (I'll probably need to dig up one of my old Router boxes).

Uh... yeah. Entirely different.

You really have 1 NIC and 1 Internal Cable modem.

This is a configuration that I'd never have... it'll cause you no end of headaches in the UT server world, as you're about to find out.

:O GOD...... put it back up immediately!

Right, except here's where you'll realize that you need an EXTERNAL cable modem to make use of it. - Sorry.

But it's the right approach... EXTERNAL broadband modem to a decent ROUTER / FIREWALL to the rest of your LAN. Then you will be like Webnutt.

I don't know what's up with your ICS but I'd guess that UT is thinking that it's behind NAT, when in fact it isn't, in your configuration.

Does the server work correctly with ICF up but ICS down?

If it does, then that's it. Try changing this with both ICS and ICF up:[list:0d68806432]
[IpDrv.MasterServerUplink]
DoUplink=True
UplinkToGamespy=True
SendStats=True
ServerBehindNAT=True <<<-----THIS ONE[/list:u:0d68806432]

Probably it should be False in your config regardless.

You'll be happiest when you buy that hardware though. That'll keep you busy for a while.

Once you have your server behind a real hadrware firewall, you can decide if you want to keep XP's ICF or not.

50BMG

I think it's working and I've seen a few other players logged in. Initial reports from people are positive, but I still find it kind of weird that I get no ping reports on my end.

Thanks for support and I hope others can benifit from our discussions. Forums like this make it all worth it.

Now to figure out how to add some cool maps.

Sorry, I never meant to say my configuration was the same as webnutts, just that I was experiencing similar symptoms as him.

As for the Firewall, I only dropped it for short periods of time... I raised it back up immediately after a given test

When I did get the server working, I had ICF enabled, while ICS was disabled.

Tried ServerBehindNAT both True and False. It should be False, but it doesn't work either way.

Yea, I realized that shortly afterwards. I still experimented with a couple things to see if there was a way around that, but no go. I'd rather not buy an external modem, but it seems that's going to be the only way to solve the problem.
