I think the problem here is with peoples home routers. I got the bright idea to disconnect my server from the router and run straight into the cable modem. Then the server started showing a valid ping in the Internet list again and people could join.

So, I reset my router and opened up only the ports outlined in Bry's "setting up a server" tutorial. Everything is fine now.

I have a SMC Barricade 7008ABR 8-port router.

Hope this helps.......

Did you open them as UDP, TCP or both?

I am having same issue that it sees it on master server but gets time out message... If you look at the IP from the master server you will notice that the port it has is not the port of the actual game. ie. 7777. It is some random port it is assigning to gain access.

Very strange!

I'm having this same problem. I can connect via LAN with the local address, but can't connect with the internet address. The server shows up with the internet address in the server list with port 61000 sometimes and 7777 sometimes, but if I connect I just get the black screen with the address, and it doesn't show up in the favorites if I add the IP manually. I've tried everything, including opening/forwarding all the ports on my router and turning off the software firewall.

Very annoying!

How do you configure UT to have the server always use the same port. I'm having the same problem that when each time I start the server, it gets assigned a different port.

I'm having the same problem, i have two computer connected with crossover cable and one sharing the internet and the other running UT2004 server, while the server computer can connect to the master server the game is not being broadcasted outside of the LAN.
It seems many people are having this trouble!

I used to have that problem, and solved it by configuring the firewall to allow connections using TCP and UDP on:
7777
7778
7787
28902

Guys, it might be the router. I had a Netgear router that just wouldn't properly forward any ports. I got a D-Link and all is good now. Just an FYI.

This is probably a bit late, but I agree with Hector-Jorge and Buddman. I've got a linksys wrt54g router and if I start a game behind it my friends can't connect over the internet. When I plug the cable modem directly to my computer my internet friends join just fine. Problem with that is I also have people over playing on LAN and they're disconnected.
After reading through this forum and tinkering for a few hours I finally got mine to work just fine. Here's how I did it. Hope it helps somebody here.

1. In my router setup I have a status page that tells me exactly which IP address each computer on my LAN has been assigned by my router. ("Status page/local network/DHCP Cliets Table button" for other linksys users). I'm not a network savy guy, so it took me forever to realize that my router IP (192.168.1.1) is NOT the same thing as my PCs assigned IP (192.168.1.100).

2. Then I used Port forwarding to send the requests from my routers IP to my intended hosting PCs IP. ("applications & gaming/port range forward" page for other linksys users) I set Application=UT2004, Start=7777, End=7777, Protocol=both (UDP and TCP), and IP address to 192.168.1.100 (for the computer, not the router. Man I feel like such a bonehead.) I checked enable, saved settings and it worked. I didn't need the other ports (7778, 7787, 28902). They do other things like advertise to gamespy or something. ALL I needed was the 7777.
I also found that I didn't need to change my UT2004.ini. Even if I left the "serverbehindNAT=false" my friends could still connect. I tried changing it anyway and what it did do was allow the ping to show on their server browser, but only some of the time. They could connect everytime, but the ping would only occasionally show.

So to summarize: All I needed to do was port forward 7777 to the correct IP address (assigned by my router). That's where I got hung up for hours. I was trying to put it on the either my assigned IP from my ISP, or on the router IP (which was dumb, but I didn't know that .100 and .1 were different). No other ports, no ut2004.ini.

I know most people don't have a linksys, but this should hold true for most routers. Hope my hours of turmoil help somebody. --Jay

--edit-- One last little bit. We tested it. I hosted and had 2 more Lan players and 3 internet players and all went well.

Well, i am stuck on this.. 2003 Server, on Mandrake 10.. DSL, port fowarding organised, thru a LAN.. and DCHP disabled with Fixed IPs all round..

I start with the Multihome=[my.ip.addy] in the start script, BehindNat at both true and false, blah blah blah.. everything you read in this thread, has been heeded, as well as the stuff here, and i am STILL getting n/a in the Browser, No probs on LAN, and any internet users just time out every time!

This is WRECKING my head.

Here is an extract from my log..

WTF!?

This has GOT to be something stupid.. I even altered permissions on all the maps and associated files, shared the folders, blah.. I am next thinking about loosing SAMBA from the linux box for a try.. I don`t get this.. why does everyone timeout? is 30 sec to little? Isn`t the "timeout" for Inactivity? or does it include the Xfer time of any files?
