You need to ask XP and 98se the ip address of their machines each in turn.

Ok,

ICS = Internet Connection Sharing

It's a service in Windows XP that's designed to allow your PC to become a Gateway (not the brand name) for your network. It's described in HELP.

To get your IP address from each XP machine, start a command prompt by using START | RUN and typing CMD - then hit OK
[list:5badf09e42]A new window will open. Enter the command: IPCONFIG /ALL. then copy that info and post it.[/list:u:5badf09e42]
Your 98SE machine is different. Use START | RUN and type: WINIPCFG and hit OK.
[list:5badf09e42]A window will open... hit MORE INFO... select the LAN NIC (not dialup adapter) and post the stuff in the lower half of the window.[/list:u:5badf09e42]

Edited to correct command & syntax

Hi rotz,

Geez I'm embarrased. That XP command should have been IPCONFIG /ALL ...

My mistake. I guess the quality of typing isn't as good at 12:30 am when I'm tired.

Ok, that last post looks like it was from the PC you wish to use as the game server.... unfortunately we already knew that IP.

Please do the Wireless connected one too.

Then, on the server machine, please to the following:
[list:b50d8477b9]START | RUN then type CMD (as before) then OK.

A Window opens. Enter the command: TRACERT 192.168.0.1

Some stuff will print. Please post that. (I hope we're almost done)

Please visit http://192.168.0.1/ with your browser (from the server PC would be fine), and tell me if it responds at all. If it provides any kind of login screen, DO NOT ATTEMPT to LOG in, just carefully note everything it says and close the browser.[/list:u:b50d8477b9]
I'll wait for those results, then tell you what I think is going on.

Well, do you remember when I said...

Well, looks like the highly unusual is just what you have.
[list:6257cae274]It seems that somewhere between your PC and the internet, there is a Firewall Router. You say you don't have it as a seperate piece of equipment, and I believe you.

The manuals I have for your modem don't indicate that it has this capability internally, as I said before.

Since you didn't tell me WHAT WAS IN THE LOGIN SCREEN you saw, I can't tell any more. But that screen is the entry point to control the router, where ever it is.

The fact that there's 12ms (if I understood you correctly) between you and the router (IP 192.168.0.1) means that the router is likely to be just on the other side of your cable modem connection, on the ISP side. However, the delay is small enough that it COULD STILL BE IN YOUR MODEM, I can't be sure.[/list:u:6257cae274]
The next step for you, is to contact your ISP, and confirm that they indeed have such a Firewall / Router in place.
[list:6257cae274]If they confirm it, ask them if they can forward ports 7777 to 7787 UDP to your system address 192.168.0.12 . You may need to explain it's for your UT game playing. Hopefully they won't have a problem doing this.

If they say they have no such Firewall, then it must be in your modem, regardless of what the documentation says.[/list:u:6257cae274]
So, contact them and let us know what they say.

Dude, you're jumping around a bit too much here.

Ok, let me guess....
[list:e58ee8c0e6]Linksys said that your Modem IS A ROUTER ?

I guess you must have called your ISP and they told you or you just decided to call Linksys first. (??)

Whatever the sequense, Linksys told you how to LOG INTO THE ROUTER and talked you thru the process of forwarding the ports. ()

Then, also on their advice, you changed your SERVER'S IP from DYNAMIC to STATIC at 192.168.0.2 (?)[/list:u:e58ee8c0e6]
I'm guessing at all that because YOU ARE GOING TOO FAST AND NOT EXPLAINING EACH STEP!!!

There, I've got that out of my system now.

If all my guesses are on target to this point, I'll try one more and say "There's no reason to change your other machines from DYNAMIC to STATIC unless they too have ports forwarded to them in the ROUTER". I know of no reason why you would need to.

If all that's correct, then they instructed you to forward 7777-7787 UDP to 192.168.0.2 (the new STATIC IP of your server) and now...

You should be "good to go". (FINALLY!!)

I don't suppose you had the presense of mind to ask them why the hell the Modem's Internal Router wasn't documented in the MANUAL?

Would have saved us about 1/3 of this thread.

Answer: Changing the SERVER from a DYNAMIC IP to a STATIC one is a good idea.

Here's Why: When you powered up your router, it is reset. The first PC you power up after that, get's assigned the first address the Router gives out. Power up the next PC and that one gets the next IP address, and so on.

So, which PC get's what IP is not necessarily the same each time the system is powered up. Understand?

If you FORWARD ports in the Router, and the system looses power... the likelihood is that it won't power up in the same sequense and the IP FORWARDING will now be to the WRONG IP.

Changing the IP of the Server PC to STATIC solves the problem, but it requires that the SERVER IP be STATIC and the Router FORWARD the ports to that new IP.

Ok?

Have you run the game yet?

I still can't get over this thing with the manual... for my own understanding, please re-post the EXACT model name, number and S/N from the tag on your modem. I help a lot of guys with this kind of thing, and I want to learn from this experience.

Good Luck!

That is not the public INTERNET address of your server, it is the private LAN address.

The internet address is the one assigned to your Router by your ISP.

192.168.0.2 is your Server's LAN address, and is the one you use when playing from your LAN.

Internet clients, will play through the other address. (the one you saw on the "Who Is" page I sent you to) This address is DYNAMIC and may change so it won't be the same all the time. That's why there's "Advertising" by Server NAME built into the game.

Leave your server up, post back with it's NAME (exact please) and I'll try to find it.

P.S. - Was there a Model Number on that tag? You didn't include it if there was. I'm just re-checking things here.
