Ok, i have a Gateway Solo 950
http://www.gateway.com/reman/hm_Note...o_9500.shtm l

256megs of ram.
nvidia geforce2 (mobile)
XP Pro (corporate)
20 Gig hd

I installed UT and patched it and added bonus packs. However wheni start a dedicated server and hop on with my other comp i get a wicked lag, like 3000.

i have no idea whats wrong. when i start one up with MY comp it works fine. this is all on lan. and i do have the "optimized for lan" feature on. i thought maybe cause its a laptop but i rembmer a few lan parties ago there were like 3 UT laptop servers that ran great. i dont' think its RAM or a CPU issue. this laptop is plenty fast enough to host a game. just wanted some help on how to fix this. thanks in advance.

I spotted your post on the "Linux or Win" thread.
If this is all the laptop is for do you have a copy of NT you could bang on and patch to SP6?

I can't see why WinXP would have problems though no one I know has tested UT as a server with XP.

i mean IF I HAVE to i'll put win2k, NT or god forbid, 98 on it. only prob is i don't have none of them

i'll have to find me a copy (i mean buy, yeah, buy a copy ).

once i do that i'll figure it out. if i run into any problems i'll come back. just wanted to know if there was an issue with XP or if it was my laptop.

**P.S.actually now that i remember, i have WinME. does ME have any issues with UT?**

Can't say about ME either.
If you can get NT then that would be better as most of the top servers use either that or Linux.

Maybe try Linux instead if you don't have NT to hand

Are you on Broadband, or 56k?

Even though you are on a LAN, the data transmission from PC to PC is still running under your network settings from yer main PC. Your connection speeds might be too low, or not adjusted enough to transmit at its potential.

For XP, try d/l Cablenut...
http://cablenut.com/

Then go to TweakXP.com' forums...
http://www.tweakxp.com/idealbb
Register and ask mnosteele about the settings. This can increase your connection rate by +50%

Plus there might also be other things slowing down yer PC in XP enough to have this effect. Take a look around TweakXP....

I've used my Solo 9100 and 9300's to host lan games lots of times.

And they were only PIII - 750's so I don't think it's the machine.

I was using Win98 and Win2000, but never XP.

My personal preference is Win2000, and I'm biased against XP anyway (Big-Brother EULA)

There is only one other thing it occurs to me to mention, and that is the Lan adapter. At one point I was using a Xircom RealPort2 10/100 cardBus Card that Gateway was hawking. It's driver had problems handling 2 protocols at once. I was using NetBEUI for file sharing and TCP/IP for internet access, but both were bound to Sharing and the Windows Client. Once I removed NetBEUI, or unbound TCP/IP from the Client and Sharing everything went fine. This was not a UT server specific problem though, all LAN i/o was affected.

My guess is that you're running out of memory, with XP and only 256mb.

When the server is running, can you see any disk activity?

Well, to check on the memory, righ click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Go to Performance, Write dowm your Available Memory. Light up UT, play one game on yer server, then drop back to the dektop and take a look. I run 256on my PC, and have no problems, and plenty of memory.

If you do loose alot of mem, there are alot of things you can do about it after a default install. Go to www.tweakxp.com and read a bit.

If you know how to use it, you'll be much happier with Windows 2000.

The primary advantage it has of Win9x is that you don't have to restart it every time you want to change network settings. Also, with Service Pack 3 it's more likely not to develop startup and shutdown problems like 98 and 98se do.

Best of luck which ever way you decide to go.

ok, i've narrowed down the problem. however, i'm still not sure how to fix it.

i downloaded that creeping ping and installed it. i first ran a non-dedicated server. ran great. ping was great (like 10-15). then i tried to run a dedicated server. ping jumped way up to 3000 again. would this be more UT problem than nic/driver issues, since it ran fine in non-dedicated? is there something in the INI that needs to be changed or tweaked for it to work right. i mean the INI is default besides the minor change to accomodate the creeping ping. What i mean by this is some guy told me to change this in the INI:

Additionally, you can try making the following change to the server's ini file:

[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
...
InitialConnectTimeout=15.0

Now if the creeping ping happens it will vanish within 15 seconds rather than 5 minutes.

Now i tried it both ways. still the problem is there. any help would be most appreciated. thanks.

From which client are you trying to access this server?
Is it the same machine?

Are you connecting via the "Find LAN games options" or are you connecting to it via its internet IP address (if it has one)?

Kill advanced power mode and all other cpu optimizing/powersaving related settings in the bios and in your OS

Some people reported that it solved the laptop problems mentioned in this thread

Goodluck
