UT99 Linux server package contains zero-byte maps
HI,
I just installed ut server 436 for linux but I noticed some files were zero bytes. Among them were DM-Deck16][ en DM-Curse][. Come to think of it, it were all the maps with ][ in the file name.
Was this a problem with the tar file, or with me extracting it? I found this post, but it doesn't really say where the problem lies.

Hmm, this may be a problem with how the compression utility compressed the files. It may have broken the code with those special characters.
I've been meaning to fix that archive to a while now to include the real textures for the server, not the "net" textures that seem to cause a bunch of problems. Guess now is a good time to go ahead and do it, fixing this new issue as well.

I didn't know the textures were required for the server. Do I need to copy the textures from a normal installation to the server for it to work properly?

Well the servers were archived with the "net" textures, to make the installation smaller on the server but if people try to use the high resolution textures on their client, it'll cause things like them not being able to move and sliding players. Using the default, regular textures referred to as the "CD 1 textures" will solve this. So yes, if you run a game server it would be a good idea to copy the textures to your server from your install, just make sure they are NOT the high resolution textures.
I already fixed the Windows server install, haven't had the time to work on the linux version yet.

You mean, use these textures on the server? I guess that's what you mean, but you're also saying that as long as people don't use the high-res textures, it works fine.
Strange that people can use high-res textures when the server has the normal ones, but not when it has the small ones...

Yes, use the "regular" textures on the server. Yes, if people do not use the high resolution textures, you'll be fine. Though you'll be surprised at how many people install and use them.
You can also just upload these textures to the server: http://ut-files.com/index.php?dir=En...r_Packages.zip

The conflict between data-ripped and hi-res texture packages is that both have been conformed to the regular texture packages, so they have the same generation number.
A potential solution could be to data-rip the hi-res texture packages. The packages created that way should be compatible to both hi-res and regular textures, while still having the small file size, which is what data-ripping for the dedicated server packages is all about.
