How to use characters in player nick

Hi, and sorry if this question has been asked and answered before.

How do you use characters in a nickname in Unreal1? I wanted to spruce up my nick a little, but I find that copying characters from the character map in Windows 2000 into the user.ini file doesn't work...special characters won't display in my nick within the game, they're just omitted. TIA...
