Little Server Prob.
Hi there,
at first : nice forum, really.
I run a dedicated LAN server on my Sony Vaio laptop.
All is fine, BUT ... when anybody connected to the server the netspeed icon (red) is shown and the message "Waiting for other players" is flashing.
A game doesnt starts.
When i run a not dedicated server all is working fine.
Can anyone help me please ?!?

Are there any power saving settings activated in the BIOS or elsewhere ? These can cause the laptop's CPU to throttle down in speed and can cause some very odd problems.

This i have deactivated, also such settings for the network-controller.
In the status-screen of the LAN-connection i see that the dedicated server sends not so many packages as a non dedicated.
I also tried Half Life and quake3 and there the servers running.
Perhaps it´s that fuc*** Win2000 ?!?

Have you installed Service Pack 4 ? There was a problem with UT servers on earlier versions of Win2K.

Sounds like clients are connecting fine, but packets aren't getting back to clients. Do you have any problems connecting UT servers from this laptop? It almost sounds like a cabling problem or something.

Do you have a firewall enabled on this laptop, or anywhere on your network, and if so are you opening the correct ports through it?

At first : service pack 4 is installed
second : the laptop can connect to unreal servers
third : i don´t know what´s a listen server is.
Whit non dedicated i mean that i start a server from inside the game.
And yes, then all is working fine. No problems.
4th : A firewall is only on the client installed (Zonealarm pro).
The network (192.168.0.0) is in the trusted zone shown and the firewall is for
these zone deactivated.
I have also deinstalled ZoneAlarm but the problem still exists.

Yep, thats a listen server.
I bet your problem is that your firewall (ZA) is configured with full access for unrealtournament.exe, but ucc.exe is blocked.
ucc.exe is used for dedicated servers, unrealtournament.exe is used when you start a server from within the game.

Have you tried pinging, doing traceroutes and other stuff from the client machine ?
P.S: ZA can act really weird sometimes, like cut your internet connection completely for no reason at all.

1. Yes, i have installed the service pack 4!
2. Yes, the laptop can connect to other servers ( also dedicated).
It coudn´t be a cable problem.
When I start a server from inside the game (not dedicated), all is fine.
3. No, there is no firewall on the laptop.
On the client (WinXP) is zone alarm running.
But there is the firewall for the trusted zone deactivated and the UDP-Ports are allowed to use.
I also tried to connect when i deinstalled Zone Alarm but the problem still exists.

On the laptop is no firewall running that coud block any of these *.exe.
And on the client both exe are allowed to connect and recieve.

So, now i have downloaded me a program called 3D traceroute.
This thing show´s me all connections and used ports.
UnrealTournament.exe is using the ports : 7777, 7778, 8777 and 80(webadmin).
That port 8777 i dont understand.
I think UT uses only port 7777 but the advanced options (->network) says
this port is in use for the ServerBeacon.
What the hell is that?

At least i have figured out the problem after i installed WinXP!
It seems that these fuc*** laptop don´t process the backgroundprogram ucc.exe cause when i start ucc and some other program wich uses processor-power then the
server running and running and all is functionating.
Strange, i kown but it is so.
Until now i have no setting found neither in win then the laptops bios do solve these
"bug".
Much thanks for all who want to help me, and keep fragging !

When you run UCC from the command line, the OS can starve the app thinking that it isn't active. This is a common problem on laptops and some desktop machines.
Try running your server from the GUI and see how it plays then.
